Aussies Drink To Oscar
ENTERTAINMENT : The hype, the glamour, the hope, the grandness that is the 71st Annual
Academy Awards is almost upon the world. With arguments aside in respect to who will clean
up the night of nights the focus now lies on the actors and actresses who have been
nominated to win. Be it Best Actor, Best Actress , or even Best Supporting Undergarment,
an award is award in this world and all are hopefull that they will be the one to walk
home with a brand new paperweight on this very special evening. Or will they?
Among this years nominees are more than handful of Australian Actors, Actresses, Directors
and Composers who are apparently there for more than just a shiny new toy to give the kids
next Christmas. Geoffrey Rush, nominated for his role in Shakespeare in Love, has
apparently made it clear that this years awards are going to be "...the year I
finally break Mel Gibsons record for how many pots of beer one can scull down at an awards
ceremony..." Rachel Griffiths, nominated for her brilliant work in Hilary and Jackie
backed up Mr Rush's comments with several hints made that she too is fond of a beer and
will drink him under the table. "I've had a few with Geoffrey before," Ms
Griffiths was reported to say, " he certainly can get a few into him, but at an
awards
night like this he falls to pieces and only manages half his usual before he's rolling
drunk, Mels record is mine!"
Not to be left out of the picture, director of The Truman Show, Peter Weir, is also coming
in on the 'drink off' action in totally Australian fashion. "I had to spend quite a
lot of time working with Jim Carey due to the making of the Truman Show. I wasn't much of
a drinker before that but I can tell you...now I am! The making of that turned me into a
competitor for the ANBSR (Awards Night Beer Sculling Record) I'll show em that us
directors can do it with the best of em!" When asked about any other competition that
the actors and actresses might see in taking out the record Mr Weir was unsure, "I've
heard that David Heirshfelder, nominated for his music composition, was bread in a small
little town in Victoria that has a lot of good drinkers...he might be in with a
show."
Most of the other Australian nominees were unavailable for comment in respect to the Beer
Sculling Record but it did seem to be a general concensus that all would be taking part in
the competition. "Its just another awards night", commented Rush, "why
should we treat it any different! Its party time!" An apparent comment was made from
Mel Gibson's management after questions regarding the current record were made. "Just
try and beat it folks. That record was made after the making of the original Mad Max. Its
held a long time and will stay like that for a long time more!"
