Contemporary Affairs - November 1999
.
(Tom Beattie with Daryl Summers)

Tom: Good evening, I’m Tom Beattie, welcome to Contemporary Affairs.   Recently,
Australian television witnessed the demise of one of its longest  running and most loved shows, Hey Hey it’s Saturday. After 28 long years in  the limelight, the Nine Network’s management headed by David Leckie decided  that Daz, the Dick, the Duck and the gang would put to air their final show on the 20th November 1999. The emotional last show ran a mammoth four hours, and in his only television interview since then, tonight we talk exclusively to Daryl Summers. Daryl, good evening.

Daryl: I am in no way bitter towards David Leckie, or anyone at  the Nine Network.

Tom: I didn’t actually say you were, Daryl. In fact I never even  hinted at it.

Daryl: I am in no way bitter towards David Leckie, or anyone at the Nine Network.

Tom: Okay. Moving on, then. Daryl, what have you found to be the biggest…

Daryl: *Interrupting* I see you still have your own show here. You must be very pleased.

Tom: Well, yes, as a matter of fact I am, Daryl. We do put an extraordinary amount of
hard work and…

Daryl: *Interrupting* Yeah, yeah, I know, just ask me the questions, that’s what I’m here for.

Tom: Okay. How did it feel to finally put the show to bed after 28 successful years
on Australian television?

Daryl: How long do you think you have till they axe you, Tom?

Tom: Sorry?

Daryl: Leckie, the bastard. 28 years, and out on my arse. You’ll be next, so watch
your back, mate.

Tom: Have you got any plans for next year, Daryl? Any television projects lined up at all?

Daryl: Well, I’m off to What’s Cooking with Jeff and Kerri-Anne, but apart from that,
I’m basically free.

Tom: Oh really? What is your job on What’s Cooking?

Daryl: We haven’t gone that far yet. All I know is, after I murder David  Leckie…

Tom: *Interrupting* Sorry?

Daryl: What?

Tom: You just said you were going to murder David Leckie.

Daryl: No I didn’t.

Tom: Yes you did, Daryl.

Daryl: Well, I was speaking figuratively.

Tom: Of course you were.

Daryl: I’m not bitter at all.

Tom: Of course you’re not. We’ll leave it there, Daryl. Good night.

Daryl: Good night, Tom.
